A bee or a clown? Jollibee or McDonalds?

They are one of the most talked about rivalry in the country’s commercial history. Both are not just ordinary fast-food restaurants, they are the most famous and best selling food chains among all levels of the country’s social structure. Appealing to Filipino children, both the bee the and clown are significant pop culture icons.

Who wins the battle for the hearts of our children? The big bee or the colorful clown?

Jollibee is an American-style fast-food restaurant.   A big bee with yellow and red stripes is its mascot that catches every Filipino kid and adults’ attention. It is one of the most famous characters in the country.

McDonalds is a franchise restaurant serving American meals. A funny clown in red and white stripes represents this fast food restaurant. Ronald McDonald is one the most prominent clown in the country.

Considering that kids are the main customers of these two fast food chains, we decided to have a simple survey to know who captured the hearts of the Juventus learners.

In a piece of paper, a picture of Jollibee and McDonald was passed on to the nursery, kinder and grade one students of the Juventus School for the Gifted.

Excitement and a warm smile were there as we asked why they chose one of the two. As if, they were all beside their favorite character.

The American image and taste of the funny clown has the attention of the K2 learners.  But overall, the busy bee won the hearts, and the palate, of the Juventus learners.

For the   parents, the   activity   indicates that   our children   have a   definite set of reasons for liking something.

This uniqueness and intelligence is rarely noticed and taken advantaged by parents.

Curiously, the answers were more than just yes, no, or simply “because I like it”. Each child has their own short stories about their experiences at Jollibee or McDonald’s. But that is for another story. (30)
